We conduct systems research in computer science — the study of computers themselves, a field that designs, builds, and verifies better computers. In our group, we specialize in system software and hardware.
Emerging hardware — accelerators (GPUs, FPGAs, Google TPUs), high-speed networks, trusted execution environments (TEEs), and quantum computers — brings higher performance, energy efficiency, and security to computer systems. At the same time, each comes with its own difficulties and drawbacks, and unlike conventional CPUs and memory devices, well-established techniques for controlling them do not yet exist.
We explore operating systems (OSes) and other system software that unlock the full potential of this cutting-edge hardware. As a distinctive part of our work, we also build the hardware itself to take over tasks that software such as the OS handles poorly. By co-designing computer systems across both hardware and software, we aim to realize fast, secure, and efficient next-generation computers.
