Another new paper on the arxiv: Probing local density of states near the diffraction limit using nanowaveguide coupled cathode luminescence. Here, we probed the local density of states of a fiber taper at its surface and near its center as the fiber size varied, and demonstrated that diffraction limit on the density of states. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that electron-induced luminescence has been collected through the modes of a waveguide directly. I think this is an important difference to the standard methods which collect free space luminescence, although that's up to us to prove as we move forward with this method!

We have a new paper up on the arxiv here. It's very interesting to me that optical tweezer techniques are becoming sophisticated enough to pick out certain types of particle by their characteristics. Previously, this kind of accuracy was something we expected from the laser cooling off-shoot of Ashkin's research, whereas optical tweezers were considered to be more of a blunt tool

Here, we were able to trap 150 nm sized particles while transporting 100 nm ones, and vice versa.
