About
Research Content
- The goal of our study is to prevent environment-induced disorders in humans.
- We investigate interaction of environmental chemicals with humans and mechanism of their toxicities based on human studies, as well as experimental studies with animals and in vitro systems.
- We collaborate internationally with universities or institutions.
Research Policies
- The aim of the laboratory is to investigate disease of humans induced by occupational and environmental factors, as well as providing scientific data basing the proposal for prevention of environment-induced disorders.
- Under such aim, concrete research problems are set based on the current situation of occupational and environmental health and world-wide research trends of occupational and environmental health.
- Any possible method may be used for solving problems. International collaboration is encouraged for the study.
- Scientific discussions are held between students and faculties on an equal basis.
- Safety and health of all the students and researchers are ensured. Education for banning moral harassment is conducted under the policy of Tokyo University of Science.
- Widening international vision and understanding the universal values of humanity are achieved through research activity.
Research Methods
- Molecular biology and cell biology methods (Western blot, PCR, realtime PCR, si RNA, vector expression, proteomic analysis, microarray)
- Morphological method (Immunohistochemistry, Confocal observation, Electron-microscopic observation)
- Animal studies (Inhalation, Instillation)
- Analytical chemistry (ICP-MS, GC-MS)
- Exposure assessment
- Epidemiology
Social Contributions Associated with Original Researches
- Prof. Ichihara is a member of committee proposing occupational exposure limit in Japan Society for Occupational Health.
- He contributed to classification of carcinogens as a member of WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monograph Working Committee (Vol. 110, 115).
- He also contributed to risk assessment of industrial chemicals as an external reviewer for US Federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry “1-bromopropane (1BP)” Toxicological Profile or US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Criteria Document: Health Effects of Occupational Exposure to 1-Bromopropane.
- As an expert of occupational toxicology Professor Ichihara contributed to law cases of intoxication with chemicals in United States (North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri) or Australia (Queensland).
- Prof. Ichihara has been consulted by patients suffering from intoxication with industrial chemicals in Japan and oversea countries.
- Prof. Ichihara can be reached by e-mail (ichihara-lab@rs.tus.ac.jp), if you are suffering from intoxication with organic solvents, dust or other industrial chemicals. He may refer you to an appropriate medical institution, if needed.
What do We Expect from our Students
- To take a role in medical and pharmaceutical studies globally and domestically.
- Be a person to be required by the society.
- If you are in any research institute or field (company, hospital, pharmacy etc.), you will continue your career in research as a collaborator at Tokyo University of Science.
