Carrying out engineering research
using CAE in advanced composite materials
and their structures
with industry-academia collaboration in mind

CFRP is used predominantly in the aerospace industry, although in recent years, the automobile industry has been trying to adopt it. The Research division focuses on engineering research that solves the problems and needs of the industry. Specifically, for the automobile industry to adopt CFRP, it is necessary to improve the basic three points: (1) formability, (2) impact characteristics, and (3) CFRP's unique design.

  1. ① Formability implies that the CFRP parts can be molded in 1 minute while ensuring high quality.
  2. ② Impact characterization is to double the shock absorption energy compared to the current one.
  3. ③ Unique designing aims not to replace CFRP with parts that currently use metal, but to design new automobile parts considering its moldability and characteristics.

The above points should be considered as the improvement element objectives. Also, the recent improvement in computer performance has made numerical analysis an extremely essential tool. Tools like CAE are being commonly used lately to reduce experimental costs significantly and increase the development speed.

In the Research division, we intend to fully utilize the CAE technology for research including the above mentioned improvement factors. The prominent feature of carrying out engineering research to effectively meet industrial needs for graduation thesis, master's thesis, and doctoral dissertation research is in fostering students who can play an active role in the society as an equipped force. In addition, we aim to build a synergistic relationship soon where trained and talented alumni will play an active role in the industry; the Tokyo University of Science graduates will obtain contract research from the industry. An attractive feature of this research division is that it conducts education and research activities based on strong industry-academia collaboration.

With the theme of composite materials, which is the material of the 21st century without exaggeration, the CAE Advanced Composite Materials and Structures Research Division builds strong collaboration with industry through engineering research using CAE technology, which has become the mainstream computational tool in recent years; furthermore, with the motto "Job in hand", we aim to train CAE engineers whose demand has been increasing in recent years and equip them for the industry.
